INTRODUCTION TO THE ROSTER

This roster of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Company A, includes the service records of over 100 men. It is taken from the official Compiled Service Records in the National Archives. Those records suffer from omissions which will be reflected in this roster. Personal data on some of the men has also been gleaned from genealogies, local histories, descendants, cemetery records, death records and newspapers.

ALSOP, WILLIAM S.: b. Sept. 4, 1825 Appointed to be Assistant Commissary, 4/4/62. He was later relieved of command, but restored to duty on 3/12/63. There are no other records at all in this highly unsatisfactory file. d. Jan. 12, 1885 buried at “LaVue” Spottsylvania Co.

BROWN, JOSEPH J.: Enl. 5/20/61 in Co. A, age 25. POW in Fauquier on 11/15/62; exchanged 3/29/63. Wded. and POW on 9/10/63. Carried as absent prisoner through the rest of the war, but there are no U.S. records on him at all. He was probably mortally wounded when he fell into enemy hands.

COOPER, SETH R.: Enl. 4/21/61 in Co. A, age 23. Farmer. POW in Stafford Co., 4/11/64; exchanged 2/27/65. Hospitalized in March 1865 for rheumatism. Carried in the 1910 Stafford Co. census at age 72 years and living with wife Virginia, whom he had been married for 50 years.

CURTIS, ISAAC S.: Enl. 7/20/61 in Co. A, age 19. Absent sick, May‑June 1862. Absent on detached service as scout for W.H.F. Lee, Nov. 1863 thru 10/6/64 last roll. Alive in 1912 in Sherman, Texas, engaged in the lumber business.  He is mentioned often in the William Campbell memoir in William & Mary Quarterly.  Curtis killed a member of the 18th New York near White Chimneys who was attempting to rape a Caroline Co. woman.

FOUNTAIN, EDWARD: Resident of Dumfries. Enl. 3/10/62 in Co. A. AWOL or under arrest for being AWOL in Nov.-Dec. 1862, Jan.-Feb. 1863 and Sept.-Oct. 1863. Deserted in Nov. 1863. Fountain's name is on a list, dated 8/3/64, of prisoners who volunteered to defend Richmond in the "Winder Legion" against Sheridan's raid.

GARRISON, HENRY T.: Enl. 4/21/61 in Co. A, age 19. Student. Absent sick, Jan.-Feb. 1862. Absent on detached service, Jan.-June 1863 and Jan.-Feb. 1864. AWOL, 6/10/64-7/1/64. Present at 10/6/64 final roll.  Lived in Baltimore postwar.  A publication of the Maryland Line veterans’ organization at that city identified Garrison as a veteran of Co. A, 9th Virginia Cavalry, and reported that he was dead.  Unless that was in error, the Henry T. Garrison shown in the 1910 Stafford census as a Confederate veteran must have served elsewhere.  That census gave the veteran’s age as 67, which dovetails nicely with the military age supplied in early 1861.
