This roster of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Company F, includes the service records of over 100 men. It is taken from the official Compiled Service Records in the National Archives. Those records suffer from omissions which will be reflected in this roster. Personal data on some of the men has also been gleaned from genealogies, local histories, descendants, cemetery records, death records and newspapers.

BROWN, WILLIAM: Farmer. Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. F, age 30. Absent sick, 8/17/62 thru 1/63. Present then thru 1/17/65 final roll. Died in a U.S. hospital in Farmville on 4/11/65; had been made prisoner on 4/7/65, with gunshot wound in the left side.

CAMPBELL, WILLIAM: b. 10/24/1837 in King & Queen Co. Moved to Iowa in 1858. Returned from Iowa to enlist in Co. F on 3/19/62. Detailed as clerk to Col. Beale from 11/17/62 thru 10/1/64 final roll. Absent with wound received at Gettysburg from 7/63 thru 12/63. Applied for transfer to Mosby's cavalry on 3/4/65. Va. legislator and Essex Co. merchant. Alive In 1909.

GARNETT, MUSCOE, JR.: b. Jan. 1, 1832, at “Farmer’s Retreat” King and Queen Co. Served in Co. F, 55th Virginia Infantry, in 1861. Enl. 3/19/62 in Co. F. Detailed as hospital steward in Richmond, July 1862 thru April 1864. No further record.

GARNETT, THEODORE STANFORD: b. 10/28/1844 in Richmond. att. U.Va. Served in the Hanover Artillery early in the war. Enl. 5/15/63 in Co. F, 9th Cav., and was immediately detached for service at Stuart's HQ. Garnett was eventually made a Lt. on Stuart's staff. Lawyer and judge postwar, wrote widely on Confederate topics. d. 4/27/1915 in Norfolk.

GATEWOOD, PHILIP T.: Enl. 9/1/62 in Co. F. Absent sick, Feb.-May 1863. Had his horse killed at Hanover, 6/30/63. Wded. and POW at Gettysburg; exchanged 8/28/63 and returned to duty in Jan. 1864. KIA near Malvern Hill, 7/29/64.

JONES, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: b. 1839 in Essex Co. Farmer. Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. F, as Cpl. Discharged for disability (chronic conjunctivitis). Died in 1865 of war-induced illness.

JONES, THOMAS MONROE: b. 1843 in Essex Co. all. U.Va. Enl.3/29/62 in Co. F. Absent sick, May‑June 1863 and Jan. April 1864 (frostbite). Present then thru 10/1/64 final roll. Texas lawyer and judge postwar.  

JONES, WALTER SCOTT: b. 2/22/1838 in Westmoreland Co. Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H. Transferred to Co. F, 8/10/62. Absent on leave once and absent sick once, then transferred on 6/11/63 to a unit which became Co. E, 24th Va. Cav. Living in Liberty, Texas, where he was a surveyor, in 1899.

Absent on conscription duty in Essex Co., Aug. Oct. 1862. Absent on furlough, Feb, 1863. Mortally wded. and taken prisoner near Hamilton's Crossing, 5/17/64 (the wound was accidentally inflicted by his own men). Died on 6/20/64 at Lincoln General Hosp., D.C.

LATANE, WILLIAM: b. 1/16/1833 in Essex Co. Physician. Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. F, as Lt. Promoted to Capt., 4/30/62. KIA on 6/13/62 during Stuart's ride around McClellan. Latane's death and burial were made the subject of much art and poetry.

LATHOM, WILLIAM T.: Enl. 9/8/63 in Co. F. Wded. at Brandy Station, 10/11/63; returned to duty in Jan. 1864. Present thru 10/1/64 final roll. Paroled at Mechanicsville, 5/1/65.

LAYTON, JOHN T.: Shown in the 1850 census as a 31-year old sailor. Enl. 1/1/63 in Co. F as a substitute for B.L. Sale. Detailed as teamster for the brigade ordnance train, Feb.-Aug. 1864. Transferred to C.S. Navy, 8/13/64. Resident of the Soldiers' Home in Richmond, 1894-1895. d. 8/12/1896.
