This roster of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Company G, includes the service records of over 100 men. It is taken from the official Compiled Service Records in the National Archives. Those records suffer from omissions which will be reflected in this roster. Personal data on some of the men has also been gleaned from genealogies, local histories, descendants, cemetery records, death records and newspapers.

BOLLING, JOHN E.: Enl. 1/29/63 in Co. G. Farmer. Absent sick, 7/63 thru 2/64. Hospitalized for gunshot wound, 3/5/64. Discharged for disability (due to consumption), 4/30/64, age 32. Paroled at Blacks and Whites, 4/17/65.

BOLLING, STITH: b. 2/28/1835. Merchant. Enl. 6/7/61 in Co. G, as Sgt. To Lt., 4/28/62. To Capt., 1/17/63. Wded. in the head at Morton's Ford, 10/11/63; returned to duty in 2/64. Wded. in thigh ca. 5/24/64. Later in 1864 he was on detached ser­vice at Brigade HQ. Paroled on 4/15/65. Bolling was warmly recommended for promotion to be Lt. Col., 24th Virginia Cavalry, by Col. Waller, Genl. Chambliss, Genl. W.H.F. Lee and other prominent officers, but did not receive the post. He served on the staff of Fitzhugh Lee for a time in 1863. Served after the war in the Virginia House of Delegates. Postmaster of Petersburg for more than twenty years. d. Petersburg, 11/1/1916.  

BOSWELL, HENRY E.: Enl. 1/29/63 in Co. G. Injury to his spine at Kelly's Ford, suffered about 6/1/63, kept Boswell out of service through the end of the war with partial paralysis. He was officially retired from service on 9/6/64.

BOSWELL, THOMAS R.: Enl, 5/5/62 in Co, G. Absent sick at two rolls, otherwise present on all records thru 1/18/65 final roll. POW at Aberdeen Church. 4/3/65.  

BRAGG, JOHN ORGAIN: b. Lunenburg Co., 1/21/1831. Enl. 6/7/61 in Co. G, as Sgt. Discharged for disability on 4/8/62.

BRIDIE, R. B.: Conscripted into Co. G, 8/12/64. Present thru 1/18/65 final roll. Paroled at Blacks and Whites, 4/17/65.

BURKE, WILLIAM J.: Enl. 11/7/62 in Co. G. Wded. at Manassas near Mitchell's Ford, 10/15/63, gunshot wound in foot, returned to duty in 5/64. While he was wounded and absent, Burke forged a surgeon's signature on a furlough paper; the outraged surgeon was most eager to have him court-martialed. Present at 1/18/65 final roll. Paroled in Essex Co., 5/11/65. Farmer near Charlottesville after the war.

CHUMNEY, WILLIAM M.: Enl. 6/7/61 in Co. G. detailed most of the time, on QM duty or as a scout, until POW at Hagerstown, 7/12/63. Exchanged from Pt. Lookout on 3/17/64. "Discharged by Civil Authority" in July 1864 (no details given).

DERBY, HENRY LANDON: b. 1843 in Dinwiddie Co. Enrolled as a conscript in Co. G on 5/5/64. His final official record is that he deserted on 6/1/64. A postwar family account, however, claims that he was wounded in the foot in Jan. 1865. d. 1909 at Lawrenceville.

DOWDY, JAMES W.: Enl. 6/7/61 in Co. G. Promoted to Cpl., 5/15/62. POW at Richards Ford, 4/29/63; paroled at Ft. Delaware during May. Absent sick from Sept. 1863 until he died of chronic diarrhea in Lunenburg Co., 12/3/63.
