This roster of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Company H, includes the service records of over 100 men. It is taken from the official Compiled Service Records in the National Archives. Those records suffer from omissions which will be reflected in this roster. Personal data on some of the men has also been gleaned from genealogies, local histories, descendants, cemetery records, death records and newspapers.

BOULWARE, AUBIN LEE: b. 12/27/1843. Enl. 6/20/62 in Co. H. Absent wded., 7/63 thru 12/63. Absent sick at 10/6/64 final roll and in hospital in 3/65. Paroled 5/5/65 at Bowling Green. Highly recommended for appointment as a cadet by superiors and leading Caroline Co. citizens, but in vain. Lawyer and banker in Richmond. d. 6/12/1897  

BOULWARE, VIVIAN GRAY: b. 1841. Enl, 2/12/62 in Co. H. Present until hospitalized in June 1864 due to gunshot wound and injury to left foot and ankle suffered on June 9th in fall off his horse, Discharged as a result, 1/21/65. Paroled at Richmond, 4/17/65. Spotsylvania Co. farmer. Died at the Soldiers' Home in Richmond in Jan 1930 and buried in Hollywood Cemetery.

BOULWARE, WILLIAM J.: Enl. 5/6/61, age 24. Absent sick at six different times during the war. Paroled at Blacks and Whites, 4/11/65. Farmer in Caroline Co. in 1904.

BROCK, HENRY CLAY: b. Feb. 1845 in Richmond. Enl. 5/1/64 in Co. H. Wded. in left knee on 8/27/64. Retired to Invalid Corps, 1/7/65. gr. U.Va. and Randolph-Macon. Professor at Hampden-Sidney. Alive in 1924.

BROOKE, GEORGE W.: Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H. AWOL after he was "left in jail at Staunton, July 25, 1861." No further record.  

BURGESS, JAMES R.: Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H. Detailed as courier for Genl. Jackson, June 1862; during the same period he was charged for losing a Sharp's carbine and a saber. Mortally wounded at Brandy Station, 6/9/63, died July 2nd.

CULLEN, JOHN A.: Resident of Brunswick Co. Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H, as Sgt. Reduced to the ranks as Pvt., at his own re­quest, on 8/9/61. Promoted to Lt., 6/27/62. Wded. at Buckland, gunshot in both thighs, on 10/19/63; returned Jan. 1864. Hospitalized with scabies in March 1865; returned to duty on 4/2/65. Paroled in Richmond, 4/22/65.

DEW, DANIEL BOONE: b. Jan. 1846. att. VMI. Enl. 7/16/63 in Co. H. KIA near Shepherdstown or Middletown during July 1863.

DEW, JAMES HARVIE: b. 10/18/1843 in King & Queen Co. Enl. 2/20/62 in Co. H. Absent sick, Nov.-Dec. 1862. Had his horse killed at Brandy Station. Present thru Dec. 1863, then no further record, inexplicably. Physician in New York City postwar, and died there on 1/26/1914.  

DOUGLAS, BEVERLEY BROWNE: b. 12/21/1822. Lawyer. Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H, as Lt. Promoted to Capt., 7/17/61. Absent attending the Va. General Assembly, Nov. 1861 thru Feb. 1862. At the 1862 reorganization, Douglas became Major of the 5th Va. Cav. In U.S. Congress postwar. d. 12/22/1878.

DUNCAN, EDWARD A.: Enl. 6/15/61 in Co. H. Absent sick from May 1862 until discharged for disability, 2/1/63, age 30. 5'3" tall. Occupation given as coach maker. Present again from March 1863 thru 10/16/64 final roll. Paroled at Appomattox. Duncan's file is full of papers seeking a civilian clerkship, pleading ill health and family hardships.  

DUNSTAN, RICHARD R.: Enl. 6/15/61 in Co. H. On extra duty as blacksmith, Aug. 1861 thru June 1863. Present then thru 10/6/64 final roll. Paroled at Richmond, 4/21/65.

EDWARDS, JULIEN T.: b. 11/14/1841 in King William Co. Enl. 6/15/61 in Co. H. Detailed as courier to Genl. Jackson, June 1862. Wded. by gunshot in right forearm during July-Aug. 1863; absent for that cause thru June 1864. Detailed in Treasury Dept. in Richmond and then on medical duty there (nurse at Chimborazo), July 1864-March 1865. Paroled at Richmond, 4/25/65.

GATEWOOD, CHARLES M.: Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H. Promoted to Cpl. on 4/6/62. Absent sick during most of the war for syphilis, rheumatism, eczema, hernia, psoriasis and finally due to amputation of his left log. Discharged, 1/14/65.

GREGORY, ROGER: An obituary in Confederate Veteran, XXVIII (1920), 429, identifies Gregory as a member of Co. H, 9th Virginia Cavalry.  He has no official service record. b. April 3, 1833, d. Sept. 12, 1920.  Attended U. Va. and William & Mary. Served in Virginia legislature postwar.

GREGORY, WILLIAM: Enl. 5/13/61 in 53rd Va. Inf. Transferred to Co. H, 9th Cav., on 9/5/62. Absent on leave, Nov.-Dec. 1862. Absent sick, May-June 1863. Present then thru 10/6/64 final roll. Paroled in Richmond, 4/24/65.

GWATHMEY, JOSEPH HARDIN:  b. July 1846. Enlisted in 1864.  Brother of R. B. G. of Co. H.  d. King William Co., 1918.  This man has no official service record, but clearly served with the 9th Cav. Late in the war.

GWATHMEY, RICHARD BROOKE: Enl. 7/10/61 in Co. H. Absent wded., July-Aug. 1863. KIA, 8/25/64.  His pistol, holster and belt were donated to the Museum of the Confederacy in 1910.

JONES, AUBREY HOWARD: Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H, as Sgt. Reduced to Pvt. at his own request, 6/9/61. Absent on leave, Nov. -Dec. 1861. Absent on special duty, March-April 1862. Jones owed the government $5 by sentence of court martial in April 1862. He put in a substitute at about that time. In July 1864, Jones was endeavoring to raise a company of artillery.

JONES, WALTER SCOTT: b. 2/22/1838 in Westmoreland Co. Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H. Transferred to Co. F, 8/10/62. Absent on leave once and absent sick once, then transferred on 6/11/63 to a unit which became Co. E, 24th Va. Cav. Living in Liberty, Texas, where he was a surveyor, in 1899.

Bn., then Col. of the 24th Va. Cav. d. 10/26/1906 in Richmond.

Saunders was never wounded during the war, but broke his ankle by stepping on a cannonball while hunting near Petersburg after the war.  On a pension application dated July 20, 1903 Saunders reported his age as 59.  bur. Oakwood Cemetery.

STACY, GEORGE PALMER: Born in England, son of an English resident of Richmond, Va. m. Lucy Turner. Served as an unenlisted and independent volunteer in the King William Artillery and was wded. and distinguished with them at Seven Pines. Stacy served with Co. H, 9th Cav., from summer of 1862 thru summer of 1863 and was wded. at Get­tysburg. (This peculiar tale is confirmed by several official documents attested by his officers.)  Member of RE Lee camp CV, of Richmond.  Died before 1900

STRAUGHAN, DAVID: b. 7/19/1828 in Westmoreland Co. Enl. 7/12/61 in Co. H. Absent sick, Sept.-Oct. 1861. Discharged on 9/12/62 for being over age (which he apparently was not!). Occupation - farmer. Conductor on the West Point Railroad for thirty years after the war. d. 1/21/1904.

TURNER, BRADSHAW BEVERLY: b. Nov. 21, 1843. Transferred to Co. H, 81/19/61 from Hanover Artillery. Absent with leave, Jan.-Feb. 1862. Wded. at Centreville, Sept. 1862. Absent sick, Nov. 1862 thru Feb. 1863. Transferred to Ordnance Dept., April 1863, and later served on staff of W.H.F. Lee.  d. Nov. 21, 1889  as a result of a fall from horseback near Chattanooga.

TURNER, LOGAN: b. King William Co. Enl. 3/15/62 in Co. H, but the only records on him, for no apparent reason, are those showing Turner present in July 1864 and paroled at Richmond, 4/20/65.  Farmer at Swoope, Augusta Co.  Gave his age to the 1900 census  as 58.  In a May 1907 document Turner listed his age as 62.  d. March 16, 1918, at Swoope, age 78.  bur. Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton.
